However you came to the field of philanthropy, all philanthropy professionals have the chance to choose whether or not we ourselves replicate habits of power asymmetry.
If we are to change our industry for the better we must to consider who we are as individuals. What will we replicate? Can we recognise when our actions reinforce dominance, 'benevolent control'*, or double standards? Can we step outside the system's pull towards power and money hoarding behaviour?
Our tiny unicorns** stay on our desks as a reminder to question what we are replicating. They nudge our minds towards curiosity, courage, and freedom of imagination.
*Benevolent Control: Term coined by Aliyah Abdur-Rahman and the DEI Works Collective describing the norm of philanthropy to make decisions for, and exert power over, people and communities.
** Tiny unicorn: Our unicorn was made using Kenneth Thompson’s origami pattern for the Blade Runner unicorn—deliberately chosen to evoke themes of self-identity, choice for ourselves and choice for others, and the morality of power. Ours is gold to symbolise the extreme wealth and power philanthropy is built around.
